Common Formulas

Elevation Difference

ΔH = BS - FS

Where: ΔH = Change in elevation, BS = Backsight, FS = Foresight

Slope Calculation

Slope (%) = (Rise / Run) × 100

Where: Rise = Vertical distance, Run = Horizontal distance

Practice Problems

Problem 1: Elevation Difference

Calculate the elevation difference between two points given:

  • Backsight reading: 1.456m
  • Foresight reading: 2.134m
Format: Enter answer to 3 decimal places

Problem 2: Slope Analysis

Calculate the slope percentage between two points:

  • Horizontal distance: 50m
  • Vertical rise: 3m
Format: Enter percentage (e.g. 6.0)

Problem 3: Contour Interpolation

Find the elevation of point P between two known elevations:

  • Point A elevation: 145.6m
  • Point B elevation: 147.2m
  • Total distance A to B: 20m
  • Distance A to P: 8m
Format: Enter elevation to 1 decimal place
