The Garifuna people's story begins in the 17th century on the island of St. Vincent, where shipwrecked Africans and indigenous Carib people formed a unique culture. After resisting British colonization, they were exiled to Roatan in 1797.
From that traumatic displacement emerged a resilient community. The Garifuna language, spiritual practices, music, and cuisine have been preserved for over 200 years, earning recognition by UNESCO as a "Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity."
Today, approximately 2,000 Garifuna live in Punta Gorda, maintaining their traditions while navigating modern life. Tourism, when done respectfully, provides crucial income for the community while allowing them to share their culture on their own terms.
Our Commitment: We work directly with community leaders to ensure this experience is mutually beneficial. A portion of every ticket supports the Punta Gorda school and cultural preservation programs.
This intimate experience is limited to 10 guests per trip to maintain authenticity and respect for the community.
